This week I completed a painting that was… arduous, completely puzzling every step of the way, and made me thankful to have learned even more about the media in which I work.

Here’s Tectonic, With Love, 2017, 19 1/8 x 18 5/16″, watercolor, ink and pastel.

At different turns, I’d hear, “You’re not done… there’s still a little bit/lot more left to paint here”, or, “It’s time to take a big risk — do or die.” The colors and layers were worked wet and dry, scraped away, rubbed into the Saunders Waterford paper till the fibers swirled, smashed, lifted with my apron, swept with a fan brush, erased into gauzy films…. I knew many years ago that my decision to work with these three media would provide me with endless challenge and creativity. I’m happy that this painting incorporates several abstracted elements, figures and what, to me, feels like an aerial and undulating perspective into relational terrain.

When I finish a work, there’s still more to do. After the paint is dry, I pull back the painting tape to see the sharp line of the reveal, where the textured media stops against the contrasting tooth of cotton paper. I remove all of the staples and sign/date/title the back of the painting. Then I store the work under glassine to keep it safe from dust and damage. Sometimes a client will purchase the work unframed, and other times I will have it custom framed — always with conservation quality materials. Each painting has its own distinct frame, specifically selected for the hues, personality, and story.

The below inked works incorporate different colors and applications of media. I found some older Microns with scruffed-up tips to make some interesting marks. Next week, I plan to work out some ideas on black and brown papers, so come back and visit.

It really is all in the details. I have a lot of fun panning out and zooming in as I work. I always feel there are many little paintings within the one.

Summer has been full of  family adventures and productive creativity. When I’m in my home studio during the day (night painting is oh-so-much-quieter), they run in and out after swimming or skateboarding. It’s a fairly frenetic balancing act. But it works. My youngest son has recently been apt to make an artistic suggestion or two. He sees a puzzled look on my face as I stand before a painting, and asks:  “Are you stuck? Do you need some help?” He is so charming (he really is), how do I say no? Surprisingly, more than once, his input is intuitively spot on. Just the other morning, he told me I might like to paint a creature in the corner of one of my WIP’s. He’s helping me write the story….

Thicket is my newest abstract and surreal painting, created with watercolor, ink and pastel, 19 1/4″ x 20″.

I began this more abstract painting, much as I do many, with only a slight perception of where the story might take me. My lines felt very much in sync with how I make contour drawings, but by using larger movements. India ink is a marvelous medium because it is so powerful, lustrous and unforgiving. Because this ink is permanent, creating with it feels like cliff-jumping. Sometimes I decide to jump really big. Why not? This work is figurative in the slightest, wildest sense. I hope to impart a kind of biophilic, nature-needing impulse.

Above is a detail picture from one of my small paintings in progress. This bird found itself on the edges of a lavender structure. I didn’t know it was a bird till I put a drop of black India ink on the sienna oval… and voila. Tweet, tweet.

It has been a productive summer thus far in my new home/old hometown, Phoenix. It’s heating up, but I feel my body adjusting to the encroaching 110+ temps. However, I won’t mind heading up north to my other mountain home, Flagstaff, to cool off and be inspired by the lupines, primroses and wild orchids.

Below is truly an Arizona drawing called Mountains and Mesas, 2016. I made it while living in an alternate reality of dewy, humid nature in the PNW.

Much of my drawing has always investigated human connection with nature. Several years ago, I read Biophilia by Edward O. Wilson. Written in 1984, this book was ahead of its time with its environmental revelations. The close-up, introspective examination of flora and fauna worlds had a lasting impression on me. He expressed our inherent need to be in a healthy, symbiotic relationship with our planet’s ecosystems of which we are a part. We are a part of this earth’s whole. I am investigating that connection even more in my new series, Elementals. The drawings are less structured, even less representationally figurative than my other work. In 2013, I began to draw these during a limited edition album art project for Pausal’s Along the Mantic Spring (below)… and I realized this the other day in a “haven’t I seen these before?” moment.

Yesterday, I pulled out the staples adhering the painting, Calamus,to its board, and untaped the border to show the reveal (clean edges). On the back, I wrote my title, signature and date painted. Lastly, I covered it with protective glassine till it is ready to take to the framers. I savor all the small, careful steps that go into the process of making, learning and caring for art.

I had a wonderful time at the group exhibition Put the Art in pARTy at Icehouse Gallery, curated and hosted by Joe Holdren. The setting is always a spacious and intriguing place to explore, as is the art.

I’m looking forward to yet another upcoming group exhibition at Icehouse on May 5: Figure So Surreal, curated by Travis Fields. I’ll be one on 36 other artists showing contemporary surrealistic work. More on that in the next post.

Here is a detail pic of something that sprang onto paper yesterday afternoon. We’ll see where it takes me. Perhaps this is where it stops.

Every day, I try to either run or hike in the Sonoran landscape. I make a practice to stop and smell the roses… and orange blossoms and creosote. There is so much visible beauty to not only enjoy, but to remind my spirit of how importantly interconnected we all truly are wherever we go, be it a quiet forest in the mountains or a sprawling metropolis. Here is a small dried barrel cactus fruit which must have been a nice meal for a bird or a javelina. It caught my eye, I passed it, then turned around to pick it up.

I am quite fond of listening to ambient music while I paint, or any time really. My favorites are bands like Pausal and The Dead Texan, who allow for a lot of open spaces between the changing chords and patiently allow the narrative to grow. Like clouds slowly overlapping, merging and dissipating. This musical piece is by an incredible group called A Winged Victory For The Sullen. It was put out on the Erased Tapes Records label, album titled, Requiem For The Static King Part Two.

I’ve just finished another small painting. I will be photographing it in the next day or so, and blog it soon.

A departure, a change, a derivation, a rabbit hole…  I like where this little work took me. I abraded the surface with so much moisture, it curled back. I scrubbed pastel into the cotton fibers till they frayed and my knuckles were raw. Here is little Calamus, 2017, watercolor, ink and pastel, 9 3/8 x 7″.

Here is my most recent painting. I so enjoyed the creation of this biophilic and expressive work. I continue to explore the automatistic, spontaneous pulse of the narrative that unfolds when I paint or draw each element. And as well, I seek to combine the spontaneous gestures with my personal reflections on nature and life at large. You can also see this work at my website.

I’ve joined a group of Arizona artists who meet monthly. We enjoy discussing technique and latest community arts news, planning painting/drawing meetups and collaborate on exhibits.  12 of us will now be presenting our work in The Artery, a gallery run by a local artist collective, through a variety of group and solo shows. I have received an invitation to a surrealism group show, Figure So Surreal, in May. This will be a large gathering of surrealists — some whose work I’ve followed for many years. “A journey into the minds of over 3 dozen talented artists as they dance with images of a surrealist world. As with all my work, I’m always bound on a journey with many surprises. I’m not a quick painter, by any stretch. It almost always takes a while for a story to unwind itself in the layers of water, ink and pastel. I step forward. I step back. I work on several paintings at once in order to keep the hum going, so when one piece needs to be left for a while, I can move to another painted narrative in-process. Each time I work, I’m encountering a great amount of puzzling, miring at times, and intense learning. Because of how varied this last year has been in my life, I find no end of ideas that I want to express.

On another far more pressing note…  it is my hope that we allow equality to stand firmly at the helm of our hearts. May we be in solidarity with those who suffer injustice and whose rights are threatened in these strange political times. Never has it been more important to speak and act, in addition to feeling our convictions to support unity in America. This is why I march. It’s why I say “resist with love”. Peace to all of you!
